About us

The Department of Economics is one of Germany's economic departments strongest in research and has a high international reputation. Excellent results in international rankings, a Collaborative Research Center, a Cluster of Excellence as well as several ERC grants and high-ranking prizes for the scientists of the department underline this success.

Our research focuses on economic theory, monetary and international macroeconomics, labor market economics, financial market economics, behavioral economics and experimental economic research.

Excellent research meets excellent teaching. The department is committed to an education that meets the highest methodological and scientific standards in all phases of study. The study programs Bachelor of Science Volkswirtschaftslehre and the English Master of Science in Economics prepare for demanding and responsible tasks in business, science, politics, and public administration.

The doctoral program at the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) allows for a direct transition from the Master program into the Ph.D. program. The BGSE established one of the first structured doctoral programs in Germany, and is one the best institutions for the education of young researchers in the field of economics today. This is also demonstrated by the success of the doctoral students on the international job market.

The Department of Economics has modern organizational structures and has built up a departmental structure based on international models. The mission of a "Department of Economics" is based on the following goals:

  • maintaining and expanding the high research competence and strong position of the department in international economic research through an excellent research and teaching environment,
  • further development of our graduate education and excellent training for young researchers at the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE),
  • a professional administrative management within the department, which supports research and teaching effectively, provides know-how and reliable structures,
  • excellent study programs, which meet international standards and provide students with the skills and competences to take up responsible positions in different occupational fields.

The main units of the Department of Economics include the Institutes, the Bonn Graduate School of Economics, the Bonn Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research (Bonn EconLab) and the Reinhard Selten Institute (RSI).
