DESCRIPTION:This paper quantifies why households save and work using a lif
e-cycle model that incorporates\nwage risk\, endogenous labor supply of bo
 th spouses\, marital transitions\, health\, medical expenses\,\nmortality\
, and bequest motives at the death of the first and last household member.
We estimate it\nusing PSID and HRS data and conduct counterfactuals to as
sess the quantitative role of individual\nmechanisms. Precautionary saving
against wage risk is smaller than in models that abstract from\nlabor sup
ply and within-household insurance. Bequest motives and medical expenses r
emain\nimportant drivers of wealth\, while marriage and divorce generate l
arge but offsetting effects\nacross household types.
