Exchange Programs
The Bonn Graduate School of Economics offers doctoral students various ways of gather research experience in prestigious universities abroad.
European Doctoral Program
The BGSE is one of the founding partners of the European Doctoral Program (EDP). The EDP opens up the way for doctoral students of the BGSE to spend time at one of the EDP-Partners in Barcelona, Florence, London, Louvain-la-Neuve, Paris, and Tel Aviv, to participate at the annual doctoral student conference, the EDP-jamboree, and to benefit from the EDP’s long-established and firm tradition to integrate graduate students into the international academic community. A good time for a research visit is during the third year of your doctoral studies. Anyhow, since places within the EDP are limited, decisions on acceptance are based on academic performance. If you are accepted to visit an EDP partner and if your supervisor in Bonn supports your plans, the BGSE finances your research visit of up to six months.
Yale Exchange Program
The BGSE has a formal agreement on a regular student exchange with Yale University, in New Haven (Connecticut). The visits last for an academic year and are financed through teaching assistantships. Doctoral students of the BGSE can apply for the Yale exchange program. The application deadline is in February each year for the visits starting in summer.
Local coordinator is Benny Moldovanu.
Please hand in your application to Silke Kinzig.
Free Mover - Without formal Agreement
Based on the excellent reputation of graduate education in Bonn, BGSE students are equally well received by other institutions without formal cooperation agreements. In the last few years, some of our doctoral students have spent extensive research visits at a number of excellent universities abroad, as for example:
- University of California at San Diego
- Columbia University
- Harvard University
- New York University
- Norwegian School of Economics, Bergen
- University of Pennsylvania
- Princeton University
- Stanford University
UC Berkeley Exchange Program
Outstanding bachelor students of our department are invited to apply for the Berkeley exchange program.
Once a year, up to three students are given the opportunity to spend a year abroad at our partner University UC Berkeley, California. Students should have excellent grades and the goal to apply for the PhD program at the BGSE after finishing their bachelor's degree. Credits earned in Berkeley will be transferable towards the doctoral program in Bonn.
Successful candidates will need to apply for individual grants by organizations, such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), German Academic Scholarship Foundation (DFG), or Fulbright for their stay abroad. The Department of Economics offers support in issuing letters of recommendation and reports.
If you are interested, please contact the coordinator Dezsö Szalay.
