History of the Library

In 1880, Erwin Nasse, the first full professor of economics at the University of Bonn, founded the library of economics (Staatswissenschaftliches Seminar) as a specialized institution for the increasingly important study of economics. The basis of the holdings is the library from the estate of Adolf Held, who had occupied the second professorship for economics. The birthplace of the seminar is a damp quarter in the wing of the main building where the English Seminar is located today.

Chronicle of the Library

1880

Erwin Nasse, the first full professor of economics at the University of Bonn, founds the Library of Economics (Staatswissenschaftliches Seminar). The basis of the holdings is the library from the estate of Adolf Held, who had occupied the second professorship of economics. The "birthplace" of the seminar is a damp quarter in the wing of the main building where the English Seminar is located today.

1888

The Library of Economics receives its budget from the savings of other departments and faculties, especially the Faculty of Law, which provides 600 marks. Due to a chronic shortage of funds, the seminar's inventory will likely become obsolete.

1919

The study of economics as a professional course is gaining importance. The seminar experiences a new upswing:

  • Move to larger premises
  • Full-time staffing by a library clerk
  • Expansion of the stock of books and periodicals
  • Creation of an alphabetical and subject catalog.

At this time, the stock contains 3000 numbers.

1928

Law and economics are united in a "Faculty of Law and Economics". The Institute of Social and Economic Sciences is established. The Department of Political Science moves into the new wing of the main building facing the city. At this time, the library contains about 14,200 numbers.

1939 – 1945

The seminary suffers considerable stock losses and has to move several times due to bomb damage.

1.11.1949

Reconstruction of the seminar stock with entry No. 1 in the inventory book.

1967

The Library of Economics moves into the newly built faculty building on Adenauerallee (Juridicum). The development of the departmental libraries during the post-war years and their growing independence results in the seminar withering away.

Ab 1984

The Library of Economics becomes the central library of the Department of Economics: the entire holdings of the department are recorded in a central catalog alphabetically and by call number, and departmental library holdings are gradually reduced.

Ab 1998

Conversion of cataloging to electronic data processing.

Ab 2002

Dissolution of chairs libraries and introduction of special locations.

2005

Start of cataloging in the Verbund (HBZ-VK) Introduction of a new classification system, the Regensburg Verbund Classification (RVK).
