Research at the Department
The Department of Economics is one of the leading economic research institutions in Europe. Our research is funded by renowned institutions such as the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) or the European Research Council (ERC). The department has a leading role in three research clusters: the Cluster of Excellence "ECONtribute: Markets and Public Policy", the Cluster of Excellence "Hausdorff Center for Mathematics" and the Collaborative Research Center "Economic Perspectives on Societal Challenges". With our research, we want to actively contribute to public debates on central societal challenges and provide impulses for effective political measures. We attach great importance to the training of young academics at the Bonn Graduate School of Economics.

Sarah Auster
Prof. Sarah Auster investigates how the acquisition, processing, and exchange of information change under conditions of complex uncertainty. In contrast to classical approaches, which assume clearly defined and easily quantifiable risks, she focuses on situations of fundamental uncertainty. She also investigates how strategic incentives for information exchange shift when potential recipients have only limited insight into the possible sources of information available to other parties.
Amelie Schiprowski
Associate Professor Amelie Schiprowski explores how companies hire and train young professionals in tight labor markets. What factors complicate the matching process? What influence do labor market policy measures have? Amelie Schiprowski researches evidence-based foundations for labor market policy that improve the matching between young workers and companies.
Tomáš Jagelka
What personal characteristics are important for a good life? What individual preferences and abilities promote positive living conditions? Economist Dr. Tomáš Jagelka explores these questions in his ERC project “FELICITAS.” He investigates which personal characteristics are important for success in different areas of life.
Francesc Dilmé
researches how prices are formed in markets where participants have varying degrees of information. He is particularly interested in how buyers and sellers agree on a price over a longer period of time—for example, in the real estate or financial markets. In doing so, he examines how prices are used to convey information that not all market participants have from the outset. He also wants to find out how well such markets function and how various legal regulations or interventions affect their efficiency.
Joachim Freyberger
The ERC project of Professor Dr. Joachim Freyberger improves the reliability of economic policy design by revealing how small modeling choices can distort results in structural models. It develops a new identification framework and advances econometric theory, which can be applied much more broadly, to deliver more robust insights on skill formation and public investment.
Cluster of Excellence: ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy
The Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute conducts research on markets at the interface of economy, politics and society. The aim is to develop a new paradigm for the analysis of markets & public policy. Both are analyzed in terms of goals that go beyond narrow measures of efficiency, such as socially responsible behavior.

SFB: Economic Perspectives on Societal Challenges
The Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich, SFB) addresses three central societal challenges: How can equal opportunities be promoted? How can markets be regulated in view of the internationalization and digitalization of the economy? How can the stability of the financial system be secured?
Exzellenzcluster: Hausdorff Center for Mathematics
At the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, economists conduct research primarily on game theory, mechanism design and information economics.

The Bonn Graduate School of Economics offers an English-language doctoral program (PhD) with an integrated Master in Economic Research for students from all over the world.

The Laboratory for Experimental Economics (BonnEconLab) stands for innovative research in experimental economics. The lab supports researchers and students in planning, designing and conducting their experiments.
Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRA)
Scientists of the Department of Economics conduct transdisciplinary research primarily in TRA Mathematics, Modeling and Simulation of Complex Systems or TRA Individuals, Institutions and Societies.
MPI for Research on Collective Goods
The Max Planck Institute for Research of Collective Goods focuses its research on applied economics and behavioral law.
CENs: Center for Economics and Neuroscience
The CENs combines neuroscience, behavioral genetics, psychology and empirical economic research to better understand human behavior, especially in economically relevant contexts.
