Joseph Schumpeter is one of the major economists of the 20th century. He is known worldwide for the notion of "creative destruction", a central idea for understanding processes of innovation and, thus, economic growth. His work was pathbreaking and finds its modern counterpart in what is now known in current economic research as models of Schumpeterian growth.

Schumpeter also played a key role in strengthening the teaching of economics at Bonn at a crucial early point, at a time when quantitative approaches to economics were just finding their way into student curricula. Similarly, he was a key figure in putting Bonn on the international map as the global economics research community was taking shape.

To celebrate the centenary of Schumpeter’s appointment to Bonn, the Department of Economics and the Economics Student Council (Fachschaft) are co-organizing an event. Prof. Thomas Hintermaier will deliver a lecture entitled "Joseph Schumpeter and his years in Bonn".
