A new episode of our ECONtribute business podcast is online. In it, host Carolin Jackermeier talks to Stefanie Huber about the economic impact of fake news, because “technology-based fake news causes massive economic costs”, says the expert (reference: min. 27:50). In the podcast, the two talk about how this can be measured and how much people value protection from false information. 

Stefanie Huber conducts research at the Department of Economics on topics including financial markets and the gender gap in management positions. In various studies, she has analyzed the economic impact of fake news. We talk about why many people overestimate their fact-checking skills, how the effect of fake news on productivity and unemployment can be measured and whether people are willing to pay for protection from misinformation.
