Hanna Schwank is a junior professor of economic history at ECONtribute at the University of Bonn. In the interdisciplinary project SOZIAHR, she investigates how the century flood in the Ahr Valley has affected the income and wealth of those affected. We talk about how natural disasters shape people's economic situation beyond the immediate damage, what's really behind the apparent local economic boom, and how researchers manage to obtain reliable data in the middle of reconstruction efforts.
